AFRICOM hosts high level discussions on G5 Sahel region
U.S. Ambassador to Mali, Dennis B. Hankins, along with U.S. Ambassadors to Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and a representative from the Office of Security Cooperation in Chad, participated in discussions about the Sahel region of Africa, in Stuttgart, Germany Oct. 8, 2019. In addition to the Ambassadors, Whitney Baird, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and Security Affairs in the Bureau of African Affairs, U.S. Africa Command leadership and Foreign Liaison Officers from Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom also participated in the talks which were aimed at creating a shared vision of the way forward among the Sahel countries. Whitney Baird, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and Security Affairs in the Bureau of African Affairs, met with the U.S. Ambassadors to Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger to discuss field perspectives and an overall approach for the Sahel region of Africa, in Stuttgart, Germany, Oct. 8, 2019. This one-day dialogue also included USAID mission directors, in addition to both Department of State and Defense personnel actively working Sahel issues, and centered around increasing understanding of country/region specific issues, partner nation positions, and their limiting factors.
