This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the African Lion exercise series. What started as a bilateral exercise between the U.S. Marines and the Moroccan Army has grown every year to include three additional African host nations, multiple African and European partners and allies, and the entire U.S. joint and total force.
15 NY Army, Air Guardsmen compete in South African event

Fifteen New York National Guard Soldiers and Airmen, who traveled to South Africa in September for a military skills competition, took home a team second place and some individual awards at the end of the week-long event.
The South African National Defence Force Military Skills Competition, held at a at a South African Army base in Potchefstroom from Sept. 9 to 16, tested competitors’ skills in rifle and pistol marksmanship, land and water obstacle courses, grenade throwing, and a eight kilometer combat run through the rugged landscape.
The event was started by the South African military Reserve Forces Council in 2006 and is open to teams from other nations.
United States Announces Donation of Helicopters to Zambia Air Force

On September 11, the United States announced an $80 million (1.6 billion Kwacha) grant to Zambia that will supply four Bell 412EP helicopters to the Zambia Air Force with three years of service, parts, and training for the helicopters.

U.S. leadership with the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) co-hosted a Women, Peace and Security (WPS) workshop with the Djiboutian Ministry of Women and Family at the Palace Kempinski, Djibouti, May 8, 2022.
The participating parties, including members of the Djiboutian Ministry of Women and Family, CJTF-HOA, and U.S. Embassy Djibouti, used the venue to initiate an update to Djibouti’s WPS National Action Plan (NAP). The NAP serves as a binding document for integration of WPS principles, including how they will be prioritized and governed within Djibouti.

The planning event is one of a series of similar events before the actual exercise in March. Beginning Oct. 18, 2021, participants laid the groundwork for the various aspects of Justified Accord 2022.
The Raven is a UAV system employed by CJTF-HOA for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. The course instructed Soldiers on how to operate the small hand-launched remote-controlled aircraft system and maintain it by fixing broken parts or performing emergency procedures.
