Symposium Focuses on Practical Solutions for Climate Security Challenges

The third Security Implications of Climate Change Symposium, organized by U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) and the U.S. Institute for Peace (USIP) in concert with the Botswana Defence Force, convened in Gaborone June 26 through June 30 to address climate security challenges. The symposium brought together more than 100 military and government representatives from the United States and 33 African partners to identify practical and actionable solutions to climate security threats, along with future opportunities to collaborate on climate risk.

Zambia’s Minister of Defense visits AFRICOM Headquarters

The command welcomed the delegation as the nation continues regional peace and security. Zambia is a security leader in the region, participating in both the SADC Mission in Mozambique and MINUSCA. Since 2014, the U.S. has invested over $9 million in assistance for pre-deployment training for Zambian Battalions supporting MINUSCA. Meetings like this one help us explore other areas security cooperation can be expanded.

Michael Langley welcomed Zambia's Minister of Defense, the Honorable Ambrose Lufuma to AFRICOM's headquarters in Stuttgart to discuss regional security and Zambia's contributions to peace and security in the region. The minister and Zambian delegation met with senior U.S. government leaders to discuss continued security cooperation to achieve mutual security goals.

Bomber Task Force participates in Exercise African Lion

Two U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancers from 7th Bomb Wing, conducted a Bomber Task Force Mission in support of Exercise African Lion 2023 (AL23) June 16, 2023. The bomber task force mission included a low-approach fly over in addition to close air support training with the Moroccan military at and around the TanTan Training Complex.
