On June 14th, 237 years ago, the Continental Army was established, beginning a tremendous legacy of successfully defending our great nation. Since our beginnings we have had the finest soldiers in the world. Soldiers who made tremendous sacrifices and who honored this nation through their loyalty and steadfast devotion to duty.
Today, as we serve our nation in the Horn of Africa, I am constantly reminded of the loyalty and dedication to a cause greater than ourselves. I'm proud to lead the soldiers serving Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. Even in just the few weeks I've been your commander, I see what a truly inspirational group of American warriors you are, a catalyst for peace and goodwill. You're a highly skilled, trained and capable force. In Africa you face many unique challenges, whether it be adapting to local cultures and languages, working in varied climates, or even facing the tyranny of distance on this vast continent, and you succeed with pride and professionalism.
We are an Army that loves living and working alongside our host nation partners, our coalition teammates, and our fellow United States military members from the Navy, Marine Corps, and the Air Force. Ours is a truly joint team, so I share the Army's birthday celebration with you as well. The Army is stronger because of the knowledge, skills and abilities each of you brings to bear.
Every day, no matter where you serve, or if you are active, Guard, Reserve or Army civilian, your courage, selfless service, and love of country are on display. Our Army is made up of Americans who are Army Strong, and who make it possible to say that the strength of the nation is the Army. Happy 237th Birthday.
