Labor Day is a timeless holiday in celebration of American workers, both past and present. The holiday was initially conceived in the late 19th century as an act of reconciliation between the U.S. government and organized labor. The turmoil of that time brought forth the culture of clean and safe work environments that we now enjoy.

Labor Day has since evolved into a holiday that honors all those who work day in and day out – whether paid or volunteering. As the unofficial end to summer, it is also an excellent time to rest, recharge, and reflect before tackling a typically fast-paced fall season.

This holiday is a time to reflect on our role in helping our African partners develop the capacity that fosters their development of peace and security, and offering our support for their efforts to develop clean, safe, and fair environments for their workforce. Refreshed eyes and minds may allow us to see and pursue new opportunities out of our upcoming efforts, such as the exercises Natural Fire and Africa Endeavor, and other value-added activities.

I extend to you, the team of U.S. Africa Command and your families, a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. Take pride in what we have all accomplished together as a command, and come back ready to continue improving the foxhole, making your teammates better, and enabling the work of our African partners.

STAY SAFE!
