Washington, DC

The United States congratulates the African Union (AU) on the 45th anniversary of its establishment.

On May 25, 1963, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was established to act as a collective voice for the total liberation of Africa. Forty five years later, it continues promoting unity and solidarity.

During this year, which also celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, it is important to note African progress in promoting and protecting democracy and human rights; particularly with the creation of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance, as well as the continued strong achievements of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.

The United States looks forward to further strengthening our partnership with the African Union, and the men and women striving to promote peace, prosperity, and democracy throughout the continent.
