U.S. Military Assists Americans Departing Chad

STUTTGART-VAIHINGEN, Germany - U.S. European Command forces assisted in the authorized departure of American citizens, U.S. government personnel and family members, and third-country nationals by airlifting them out of Chad on Monday, February 4, U.S. European Command (EUCOM) officials said in a news release.



At the request of the U.S. ambassador to Chad, Louis Nigro Jr., the U.S. military is assisting with the ordered departure of Americans from N'Djamena, Chad, EUCOM officials said in the February 5 news release.



Two C-130 aircraft were used to take more than two dozen Americans and more than three dozen citizens of Egypt, Lebanon, Madagascar, France, Cameroon and Germany to Yaounde, Cameroon.



American citizens may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions at http://travel.state.gov or by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada, or 1-202-501-4444 from overseas.



U.S. European Command is monitoring the situation closely and is standing by to provide further assistance to ensure the safety and security of U.S. embassy personnel and American citizens.



U.S. European Command has geographic responsibility for providing military support to U.S. policy in Chad. United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) is scheduled to assume geographic responsibility for U.S. military support in Africa beginning October 1.
