YAOUNDE, Cameroon – The Maritime Operations Center/Maritime Domain Awareness (MOC/MDA) Curriculum Finalization Workshop, sponsored by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet (CNE-CNA/C6F), concluded on July 24, 2015.

The goal of the workshop was to further develop and refine MOC standards and gain concurrence from Gulf of Guinea partner nations in order to finalize the curriculum for a MOC/MDA training course that will be implemented throughout the region.

Quick Facts

• The workshop, held at the Interregional Coordination Center (ICC), included 11 senior-level African Navy/Coast Guard attendees, representing 7 Gulf of Guinea partner nations, the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and ICC.

• African MOC standardization has been a program of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet since 2007 under the international maritime security initiative Africa Partnership Station. CNE-CNA/C6F, in conjunction with U.S. Navy Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), has developed the MOC Standard, a set of guidelines in which to man, train, and equip MOCs throughout Africa and is actively working with MOCs throughout Africa to reach the standards developed and agreed upon by the African partner nations.

• The workshop incorporated the MOC Standard into the MOC/MDA curriculum. The curriculum will consist of four independent courses, each with a specific target audience: MOC Operations, MOC Maintenance, Tower Climber’s Safety Course and an Executive Level MOC Standardization Briefing

• Africa Partnership Station (APS) is an international security cooperation initiative aimed at enhancing maritime forces’ information sharing practices, response capabilities, and regional cooperation to improve safety and security in the waters around Africa.

• U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
